From Defeat to Victory

Whenever they met in battle, the Jews used to be defeated

 |  Shaykh Walid As-Samami^ah  |  Al-Mawlidu n-Nabawiyy

The birth of the prophet Muhammad ﷺ occurred at dawn on the twelfth night that had passed from Rabi^ al-‘Awwal, according to the most widely accepted opinion among the general public.

‘Ahmad narrated in his Musnad and Al-Bayhaqiyy reported from Ibnu ^Abbas, may Allah accept their deeds, that the Prophet ﷺ was born on a Monday, received revelation on a Monday, migrated on a Monday, entered Madinah on a Monday, and passed away on a Monday. Notably, extraordinary phenomena occurred at the time of the birth of the Chosen One ﷺ. Among the most comprehensive lines composed in commemoration of the unusual events surrounding the noble Prophet's birth is the following saying of the poet:

وَمَوْلِدُهُ قَدْ كَانَ فِيهِ عَجَائِبٌ
وَنُكِّسَتِ الأَصْنَامُ حَقًّا بِلَا مِرَا
Verily, by astounding signs, his birth was marked,
The idols overturned, without dispute, and ruined.

In awe of Taha, the palace of Khosrow shattered,
The Messenger of Allah, the finest who ever recited.

The fires in Persia's land were swiftly quelled,
And the monks heralded the glad tidings they held.

With his coming, creation shone, and with pride swelled,
Through his virtue, mankind flourished and excelled.

He was delivered circumcised, clean, with his umbilical cord already severed. As he emerged from his mother, his fingers were clenched, with his index finger raised, as if he were performing tasbih with it.

In the love of the chosen Prophet and his lofty rank

What can we say that is fitting and true on the day of the birth of the beloved, our master Muhammad? O Messenger of Allah, O you who are magnificent and glorified, exalted and the honoured beloved... O you who have shown immense favour upon your nation… O you who privileged your ‘Ummah with the supplication granted to you by your Lord. You said: "Every prophet has a supplication that is answered, and every prophet hastened his supplication" (Narrated by Muslim). Yet you, out of mercy for them, saved it as an intercession for them. You are, as your Lord described you in His Book: بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَؤُوفٌ رَّحِيم﴿ "compassionate and merciful towards the believers". You are the one who will be said to you on the Day of Judgement: “O Muhammad, ask and you shall be given, intercede and your intercession shall be accepted.” And you will say: "O my Lord, my nation, my nation!" (Narrated by An-Nasa’iyy). You are the one who guided us to goodness, so may Allah reward you with the best of rewards on behalf of this ‘Ummah.

What fitting and truthful words can we express on the day of the birth of our beloved master, Muhammad? O Messenger of Allah, you who are magnificent, glorified, exalted and honoured… O you who have shown immense favour upon your nation… O you who privileged your ‘Ummah with the supplication granted to you by your Lord. Indeed, you said: “Every prophet has a supplication that is answered, and every prophet hastened his supplication” (Narrated by Muslim). Yet you, out of mercy for them, reserved it as an intercession for your people. You are, as your Lord described you in His Book: بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَؤُوفٌ رَّحِيم﴿ "compassionate and merciful towards the believers." You are the one who will be addressed on the Day of Judgement: “O Muhammad, ask, and you shall be granted; intercede, and your intercession shall be accepted.” And you will respond: “O my Lord, my nation, my nation!” (Narrated by An-Nasa’iyy). You are the one who guided us to goodness; may Allah reward you with the best of rewards on behalf of this ‘Ummah.

Al-Bayhaqiyy narrated from Ibnu ^Abbas, who said: The Jews of Khaybar fought against Ghatafan, and whenever they met in battle, the Jews of Khaybar were defeated. The Jews then sought refuge in this supplication, saying: “O Allah, we ask You by the rank of Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, whom You promised to send to us in the latter days, to grant us victory over them.” Thus, whenever they encountered Ghatafan, they invoked this supplication and defeated them. However, when the Prophet ﷺ was sent, they disbelieved in him. Allah, the Exalted, revealed:

﴿وَكَانُوا مِن قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُم مَّا عَرَفُوا كَفَرُوا بِهِ، فَلَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ﴾

“And they had previously sought triumph over the disbelievers [asking for support through the coming of the Prophet whom they recognized]. Yet when there came to them that which they had recognized, they disbelieved in it. Thus, the curse of Allah befalls the disbelievers.”

How noble you were, in life and now in your departure, O my master, O Messenger of Allah. Blessed is your remembrance, and blessed is the gathering in which you are remembered, O Messenger of Allah. The tongues revel in invoking blessings for you ﷺ and find solace in your remembrance. How could we not rejoice in you, O Beloved of Allah? How could any gathering not be graced by the mention of Muhammad ﷺ? For he is the one who prostrates and bows, ever humble and submissive; the forbearing and modest, the master of all masters, the source of blessings and the fountain of all goodness.
