An overview of Zakah on olive oil and olives
An-Nawawiyy stated in Sharhu l-Muhadhdhab: “Ash-Shafi^iyy (may Allah accept his deeds) mentioned in his earlier opinion (al madh-habu l-qadim): ‘If one gives olives as Zakah, it is permissible because they are storable. However, I prefer that one gives a tenth of the produce in the form of oil, as it represents the final stage of preservation.’”

The month of Ramadan
Zakah al-Fitr and its recipients
The Zakah of Fitr is due on every Muslim who is alive for part of Ramadan and part of Shawwal (the month after Ramadan .) According to Imam Ash-Shafi^iyy, the due Zakah for each is a “sa^” or four times a pair of average-sized hands cupped together (“mudd”) filled with the most common staple food of one’s area. However, according to Imam Abu Hanifah, the due Zakah is three “mudd” of wheat or six “mudd” of dates, barley or raisins.
