visiting graves

The Prophet ﷺ did not exclude any specific day for visiting graves

The Prophet ﷺ did not exclude any specific day for visiting graves. Lady ^A’ishah, may Allah accept her deeds, said that whenever it was her night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would go out towards the end of the night to visit Al-Baqi^ (cemetery).

This is recorded by Muslim in the Book of Funerals, in the chapter: 'What is to be said when visiting the graves and supplicating for their inhabitants.' The Prophet ﷺ did not exclude any specific day for visiting graves, whether it was on ^Id or otherwise.

In Al-Fatawa l-Hindiyyah, in the sixteenth chapter on visiting graves and reciting the Qur'an in cemeteries (5/350), it states: “The most virtuous days for visitation are four: Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Visiting on Friday after the prayer is good, on Saturday until sunrise, and on Thursday at the beginning of the day, and some said at the end of the day. The same applies to blessed nights, especially the Night of Al-Bara’ah, as well as blessed times like the first ten days of Dhu l-Hijjah, the two ^Ids, ^Ashura, and other auspicious seasons, as mentioned in al-Ghara’ib.” [End quote.]

As for the belief held by some that visiting graves on the two ^Ids is forbidden, claiming that these are days of joy, there is no basis for this. The purpose of visiting is reflection, supplication, and the like, and this does not conflict with the visit taking place on the two ^Ids.

Moreover, it has been authentically reported in the hadith narrated by Muslim in the Book of the ^Ids Prayers, in the chapter: 'What is to be recited in the two ^Ids prayers,' that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite Suratu Qaf in the two ^Ids prayer [End quote.], despite it containing verses that remind one of death and the Hereafter.

In the book Al-‘Idah by Imām An-Nawawiyy, in the sixth chapter on visiting the grave of our master, the Messenger ﷺ, and matters related to that (p. 161), it states:

“It is recommended to visit Al-Baqi^ every day, especially on Friday.” [End quote.] And in it: “It is recommended to visit the graves of the martyrs of ‘Uhud, and the best time for this is Thursday, beginning with Hamzah, the uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” [End quote.]

And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
